UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Established in 1976, it provides financial and technical assistance to innovative approaches aimed at fostering women's empowerment
and gender equality.
Its four strategic goals are:
- Reducing women's poverty and
exclusion,
- Ending violence against women,
- Reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS
among women and girls,
- Supporting women's leadership
in governance and post-conflict reconstruction.
It works with governments to achieve these goals and aims to transform institutions
to make them more accountable. CEDAW and the Beijing Platform frame UNIFEM’s work.
UN Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) It’s purpose is to promote and strengthen the effective implementation of the Millennium Declaration,
the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action of the Fourth World Conference on Women

OSAGI also promotes gender mainstreaming: a globally accepted strategy for
promoting gender equality. Mainstreaming involves ensuring that gender perspectives and attention to the goal of gender equality
are central to all activities - policy development, research, advocacy/ dialogue, legislation, resource allocation, and planning,
implementation and monitoring of programs and projects.
